The Cardiff Bay Barrage

One of Europe's largest investment and engineering projects.

The Cardiff Bay Barrage Project. Measuring 1.1 km. in length, the barrage was designed as part of the massive drive to create a new waterfront environment for Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The impounded waters of the Taff and Ely rivers  now form a huge freshwater lake.

Why? Cardiff has a tidal range of 14 metres, one of the greatest tidal ranges in the world. Low tide conditions made the Bay inaccessible by water for up to 14 hours a day - with only exposed mudflats being visible. The barrage, and the resulting freshwater lake are designed to encourage public use of the area. It will be possible to walk along the whole length of the barrage (which will be landscaped along its inner face) and to take a look at the new face of a city famous for its port since Roman times.
