The Morris collection Declaration of Independence print.
This is an old print of the engrossed Declaration.
Approximate print dimensions:
Width: 8.75 inches.
Height: 11.75 inches.
The left hand margin is damaged and the original
width of the print would have been around 9 inches.
The print has been pasted to a piece of card,
perhaps the back cover of a book in which it originally appeared. The card
retains remnants of a faded red fabric covering.

| The Declaration of Independence was
drawn up by Thomas Jefferson who was proud of his Welsh blood, and
signed by 18 men of Welsh descent. The connection with Monmouthshire
is strong. Lewis Morris was descended from a Monmouthshire family and
another signer, Francis Lewis, had been born in Newport, in those days part of the old
county. |
