| Pencoed Castle gatehouse.
As seen by Fred J. Hando in "The Pleasant Land of Gwent" (pub. R.H. Johns Ltd.1944) As part of our research into Pencoed Castle, we bought an old copy of "The Pleasant Land of Gwent" (otherwise Monmouthshire in South East Wales). This contained the drawing of the Pencoed gatehouse and round tower at the top of this page and a drawing of a tomb stone erected in memory of Sir Nicholas Morgan, knight of Pencoed Castle in the reign of Henry VII. The book turned out to contain another sidelight on Welsh history, this time based in more recent events. Inside the front cover was a faded cutting from the South Wales Argus of November 1947. The cutting told the story of the closing of the Llanmartin p.o.w. camp, formerly used to house German officers. It reproduced a letter to the Editor signed by 207 German officers and expressing their feelings on leaving for home. The Monmouthshire people "gave us a marvellous example about human feelings. They did their best to ease our situation, trying to make us forget that we were prisoners of war... In the course of time we were invited to British homes and recognised how much we are actually alike. We hope this friendship will last, bearing the germ for an everlasting peace." Written in the flyleaf of the book was the following inscription: "In grateful remembrance of a wonderful summer in Llanbedr Hall. November
1st. 1947."
